Why Does My Dental Implant Feel Sensitive?

If you have dental implants, chances are you have already experienced tooth sensitivity at some point in your life. But with dental implants, you probably thought those days were over. That’s because though they look and function just like natural teeth, your dental implants aren’t “real” and thus shouldn’t be able to feel anything. But what happens when your mouth begins feeling sensitive at or around your implant site? Here’s why feeling sensitivity or pain in this location is a red flag, and why you should see your dentist immediately.

Causes of Sensitivity

With dental implants, there are several reasons why you could be experiencing sensitivity, including:

  • A gum infection from the cement on your implant crown
  • Impending implant failure
  • Unrelated (but still serious) sensitivity from a nearby tooth or gum tissue
  • An allergic reaction

Other Signs of Implant Failure

In addition to tooth sensitivity, there are a few other warning signs that could signal that your dental implant is failing. These include:

  • Looseness in the implant
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Receding gums around the implant
  • Difficulty chewing or biting

How to Lower Your Risk of Implant Failure

One of the best ways to ensure that your dental implants stay strong and healthy is to take excellent care of them before they become injured. Just follow these easy tips for success:

  • Eat a calcium rich diet
  • Visit your dentist for your semi-annual exams
  • Brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush twice a day, and floss once a day
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash
  • Use a mouthguard if you grind your teeth (bruxism)
  • Quit smoking or using products that contain nicotine

Next Steps

While feeling discomfort at your implant site does not necessarily mean your implant is failing, this is a possibility, and as such, should be treated urgently. For any other reason, you still need to be seen as soon as possible, as it can be difficult to tell on your own where the pain is originating from and what is causing it. Thus, if you notice any sensitivity on or around your implant site, be sure to contact your dentist as soon as possible for further instruction.
